About the Greater Flamingo

The Greater Flamingo is the largest species of flamingo and is widely distributed across parts of Africa, Europe and Asia. The species is globally classified as Least Concern, although its population trend in India is currently reported as declining.

Greater Flamingo at Thol Bird Sanctuary

Thol Bird Sanctuary, located near Ahmedabad in Gujarat, is an important wetland and birdwatching destination. Gujarat Tourism describes Thol as a habitat for more than 160 bird species and specifically highlights flamingos among the birds found at the sanctuary.

During the winter season, large numbers of migratory and wetland birds can be seen around Thol Lake, making it a popular destination for birdwatchers and wildlife photographers. Gujarat Tourism also highlights the presence of large flocks of flamingos at Thol during the winter period.
