Description

The Egyptian Vulture (Neophron percnopterus) is a distinctive Old World vulture and one of the important vulture species found in India. This original wildlife photograph captures an immature Egyptian Vulture, highlighting the darker juvenile plumage and distinctive features that separate young birds from adults.

The photograph was captured in the wild by wildlife photographer Amarjeetsinh Jhala as part of the Focused Nature By AJ collection of original Indian bird and wildlife photography.

About the Egyptian Vulture

The Egyptian Vulture is a relatively small vulture with a distinctive appearance. Adult birds are predominantly pale, with contrasting dark flight feathers and a yellow bare face. Immature birds look considerably different, generally showing darker brown plumage and a greyish bare face.

The species is associated primarily with open and semi-open habitats and can be found around grasslands, agricultural landscapes, rocky areas and other suitable environments.

Immature Egyptian Vulture

Young Egyptian Vultures can be challenging to identify because their plumage differs substantially from that of adults.

An immature Egyptian Vulture generally has darker brown plumage and a less developed adult facial appearance. As the bird matures, its plumage gradually changes toward the characteristic pale appearance of an adult Egyptian Vulture.

Photographs of immature birds are valuable for bird identification, wildlife education and documenting the different stages of a species’ development.

Egyptian Vulture in India

The Egyptian Vulture occurs across India and is currently considered a species of significant conservation concern.

The State of India’s Birds 2025 update classifies the Egyptian Vulture as High Conservation Priority in India and reports a rapid long-term decline in its Indian population. Its current annual trend is also listed as declining. The global Red List category is Endangered, and the species is listed under Schedule I of India’s Wildlife Protection Act.

This makes photographs of Egyptian Vultures particularly valuable as part of the visual documentation of India’s birdlife.
