Description
This original wildlife photograph features a Black-winged Stilt (Himantopus himantopus), one of the most distinctive long-legged wading birds found across Gujarat and India.
Also known as the Common Stilt or Pied Stilt, the Black-winged Stilt is easily recognized by its exceptionally long pinkish-red legs, slender black bill and contrasting black-and-white plumage. Its long legs allow it to move through shallow water while searching for food.
The species is strongly associated with wetlands and shallow-water environments, including lakes, ponds, marshes, mudflats and other suitable water bodies. Black-winged Stilts use these habitats for feeding and breeding and are frequently encountered in wetland landscapes.
The Black-winged Stilt is a familiar bird of Gujarat’s wetlands, where it occurs as a resident species. Recent bird assessments also describe the species in India as a resident and local migrant with a strong wetland association.
The striking contrast between the bird’s black wings and white body, combined with its extremely long legs, makes the Black-winged Stilt an excellent subject for bird photography, wildlife art, educational material and nature publications.
According to the State of India’s Birds 2025, Himantopus himantopus is classified globally as Least Concern (LC) and is listed under Schedule II of India’s Wildlife Protection Act.
