About the Sarus Crane

The Sarus Crane (Antigone antigone) is a large member of the crane family Gruidae and one of India’s most recognizable wetland birds.

It is famous for its extraordinary height and is considered the world’s tallest flying bird. An adult Sarus Crane can reach an impressive standing height, with its long legs and long neck giving it a distinctive silhouette.

The species is easily identified by its grey body, long pale legs, long neck and the vivid red bare skin covering much of its head and upper neck.

The Sarus Crane is a resident bird in India, meaning that Indian populations remain in their general range throughout the year rather than undertaking long-distance seasonal migration.
