Description
This original wildlife photograph features a female Yellow-throated Sparrow (Gymnoris xanthocollis), also known as the Chestnut-shouldered Petronia, photographed in Gujarat, India.
The Yellow-throated Sparrow is a small passerine bird belonging to the Passeridae family. It is found across much of the Indian subcontinent and is particularly associated with open woodland, scrub, cultivated landscapes and areas around human habitation.
Female Yellow-throated Sparrow
The female Yellow-throated Sparrow has a more subdued appearance than the male. One of the characteristic features of the species is the chestnut colouring around the shoulder area, while the yellow throat marking is much less prominent or absent in the female.
This makes the female particularly interesting for bird identification, wildlife education and natural-history photography.
Yellow-throated Sparrow in Gujarat
The State of India’s Birds 2025 assessment lists the Yellow-throated Sparrow as a resident species in Gujarat. The species has a global conservation status of Least Concern (LC) and is listed under Schedule II of India’s wildlife protection framework.
The species is associated with woodland and plantation-type habitats as well as open landscapes. Gujarat’s combination of agricultural areas, scrub, scattered trees and open woodland provides suitable habitat for this adaptable sparrow.
