Description
The Rose-ringed Parakeet (Psittacula krameri) is one of India’s most familiar and distinctive parakeets, recognized by its vibrant green plumage, bright red bill and exceptionally long, slender tail. It is widely found across Gujarat and can occur in woodlands, open countryside, agricultural areas, parks, gardens and urban environments.
This original wildlife photograph captures the natural beauty and characteristic appearance of the Rose-ringed Parakeet, also commonly called the Indian Ring-necked Parakeet or Indian Parakeet. The species is highly social and is often seen in groups, particularly when feeding or moving between trees. Its green plumage can blend surprisingly well with foliage despite its vivid appearance.
Rose-ringed Parakeets have a varied plant-based diet that includes seeds, grains, fruits, flower material and nectar. They are adaptable birds and are frequently encountered around cultivated landscapes as well as human-modified environments.
The species is currently classified as Least Concern (LC) globally and is listed under Schedule II of India’s Wildlife Protection Act. State of India’s Birds 2025 identifies the Rose-ringed Parakeet as a resident species in Gujarat, with a low conservation-priority classification and a stable current annual trend.
