The Siberian Stonechat (Saxicola maurus), also known as the Asian Stonechat, is a small insectivorous passerine of the Old World flycatcher family, Muscicapidae. It is a seasonal visitor to much of India and is particularly associated with open landscapes during the winter months.

The Siberian Stonechat breeds across large parts of temperate Asia and moves south during the non-breeding season. In India, the species is classified as a winter migrant and localized summer migrant. The State of India’s Birds 2025 identifies it as an open-habitat specialist, making open country, grassland and agricultural landscapes important environments for the species.
Siberian Stonechats feed primarily on insects and other small invertebrates, often using exposed perches from which they can watch the surrounding ground and vegetation for prey.
The species is listed as Low Priority in Gujarat by the State of India’s Birds 2025 assessment and is protected under Schedule II of India’s Wild Life Protection Act. The Gujarat assessment currently reports insufficient data for confidently categorizing its long-term and current annual population trends.
