Description
This original wildlife photograph captures a Blue Bull, also known as Nilgai (Boselaphus tragocamelus), in close-up, showcasing the distinctive features of one of India’s largest antelope species.
The Nilgai belongs to the Bovidae family and is the largest Asian antelope. Adult males develop a characteristic blue-grey coat, which gives the species its widely used name Blue Bull, while females are generally brown. The species has distinctive white markings around the face, throat and lower body.
Nilgai are commonly associated with open grasslands, scrubland, savanna, agricultural landscapes and areas with scattered trees. They generally avoid dense forests and are well adapted to a variety of open habitats across India, including Gujarat.
The Nilgai is an herbivorous mixed feeder, consuming grasses, leaves, herbs and other vegetation. Its diet can shift between grazing and browsing depending on the availability of food.
The species is currently classified as Least Concern globally, while India’s current ungulate assessment lists Nilgai under Schedule II of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
This detailed Nilgai close-up photograph is suitable for wildlife collections, nature websites, wildlife articles, educational material, field guides, magazines, books, calendars, conservation-related publications and commercial media projects.
